Mr Bongiorno, 78, was a founding partner of the Bongiorno Group, which was established in 1964 in Melbourne and now has offices in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, and NSW, and around 30 authorised representatives.

The advice veteran had more than 55 years of experience as a certified financial planner and specialist SMSF adviser and was also a fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants and Certified Practising Accountants, and a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).

“It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Tony Bongiorno on 6 October 2023. An irrepressible man, a life so big and beautiful,” wrote Bongiorno Group chief executive Margaret Mote.

“We have been overwhelmed by the messages from all of you and are heartened by the impact that Tony has had on so many lives. He was a mentor, leader and father figure to so many people.

“Tony was the most caring, giving, kind person. He had a unique way of making people feel important and special, always taking the time to listen and to care.

“Tony adored his clients. He celebrated their achievements as if they were his own and stood alongside them through their challenges.”

Ms Mote said that Mr Bongiorno passed following a charity cycling ride.

“We draw some comfort from the knowledge Tony passed after engaging in something he loved; cycling for charity. His motivation for the ride, his passion for fitness, his competitive spirit and of course, his eternally generous soul are quintessentially Tony,” she said.

“We will forever be inspired by Tony and will ensure his legacy lives on forever. We commit to remembering him by sharing his love and dedication to everyone in his life; clients and colleagues, family and friends.”

Posting on LinkedIn, Jason Brown, head of distribution at BT, said: “Sad news at the passing of one of the architects of our great industry. Passionate to the end about clients, business, family and causes that are bigger than himself. Vale Tony Bongiorno.”

Adam McCann, director at Bartons Financial Services, wrote that Mr Bongiorno was more than a colleague, but a “mentor and confidant”.

“His enduring legacy lies in the confidence and belief he instilled in others, inspiring them to realise the best versions of themselves,” Mr McCann wrote on LinkedIn.

Financial Services Council of New Zealand CEO Richard Klipin also described Bongiorno as a “legend” of the industry.

“A man of principles, values and belief in community. He influenced many of us in the sector in so many positive and powerful ways. He was always willing to share and provide his guidance and expertise willingly,” he wrote on LinkedIn.
