Music about money is abundant, however music that specifically deals with issues financial advisers deal with daily are few and far between. So, here are some (wildly tenuous) songs about financial advice to add to your playlist.
Money by Pink Floyd
This dad rock anthem is quite possibly the quintessential song about financial advice out there.
“Think I’ll buy me a football team,” muses singer and guitarist David Gilmour over the track’s funky 7/4 time signature. Sounds like someone is in need of an adviser to pull off an investment that ambitious!
$0 by Cameron Winter
While one might assume from the lyrics that the oddball Gen Z singer-songwriter is singing about a lover that makes him feel worthless and downtrodden, to that I would say nonsense!
Clearly what the indie/underground hero is crooning about is the advice gap, in particular how it impacts younger investors who feels like their net worth is too low to seek out advice, making him feel like the titular $0 man.
Taxes by Geese
Cameron Winter features again, this time with his critically acclaimed band Geese.
It seems the rising star is in serious need of an adviser, as not only is he feeling left out by the gap, but desperately wants to reduce his tax load, threatening that he will have to undergo a crucifixion if the government want to extract his hard-earned dollars (yikes!).
Gold Hole by shame
One for all the punk lovers out there, shame’s 2018 track off their debut album Songs for Praise is about… gift giving?
Well, it’s certainly about departing with one’s wealth as you get older through gifts and investments, rather than inheritance. Not to one’s family though. Just to a younger party who is in need of some financial assistance and has a taste for Louis Vuitton. Hope he contacted his adviser about this!
4 American Dollars by U.S. Girls
This soulful jam from the (ironically) Canadian musician has one clear message: you CAN do a lot with 4 American Dollars.
As advisers begin to suggest alternatives to their investors more and more, looking to get your hands on some American Dollars might be wise to help diversify your client’s investment portfolio.
Common People by Pulp
A poignant commentary on class and how the young, generationally wealthy will treat the working-class lifestyle as a fun little diversion rather than the often-challenging reality it is?
Nah! This is a song about the dream client who is cutting costs and maximising savings while they still have time to accumulate wealth, making their adviser’s life a lot easier!
Mo Money Mo Problems by the Notorious B.I.G.
As any good adviser would know, client’s needs often grow more complicated the more wealth they hold.
And it seems Biggie had this issue back in the mid ’90s. If only ifa was around back then so he could see who the industry thought leaders are and perhaps find himself an adviser.
Money for Nothing by Sultans of Swing
Money for nothing? Chicks for free? I don’t know what passive income source Mark Knopfler’s financial adviser told him to get on but it seems to be working wonders!
