AIA Australia announces new general counsel

The life and health insurer’s new appointment will commence this month.

AIA Australia has confirmed that Kristy Redfern will take on the role of general counsel effective 30 May 2022.

Ms Redfern will move into the position after joining AIA New Zealand in 2016 as general counsel and executive director, where she was heavily involved in the acquisition and integration of the Sovereign life insurance business and the regulatory change programme in New Zealand in response to the Australian Royal Commission.

“I’m overjoyed to announce the appointment of Kristy as AIA Australia’s new general counsel,” AIA Australia CEO and managing director Damien Mu said.

“Her passion and drive to make a difference will be invaluable as we continue our mission to make Australia the healthiest and best protected nation in the world.”

Ms Redfern has been a director on the Financial Services Council (FSC) board in New Zealand for the past five years and is also a co-chair of the inaugural FSC diversity and inclusion committee which she launched.

Prior to joining AIA, Ms Redfern worked as head of legal at Suncorp Group New Zealand and has previously held roles at top law firms in the UK, Oman and New Zealand.

“I’m thrilled to begin this next chapter of my career, leading the AIA Australia legal team,” Ms Redfern said.

“It has been an honour to lead through an ambitious period of growth for AIA New Zealand over the last six years. I’m driven and inspired to do the right thing, in the right way with AIA and to help people lead healthier, longer, better lives.”
