FAAA hires new head of marketing and communications

The Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) has appointed an industry veteran to lead its marketing and communications.

The advice association has named John Summerhays as its new head of marketing and communications, with Mr Summerhays bringing more than 17 years of financial services marketing experience.

He was most recently the head of marketing for Australia within PageGroup’s marketing division and had worked for the firm since 2017 to 2023.

Prior to this, Mr Summerhays was a part of BT Financial Group’s marketing team for 11 years, working across its suite of products and services, including financial advice, life insurance, superannuation, and private wealth.

In his new role, Mr Summerhays will lead the FAAA’s marketing and communications team to “raise awareness and understanding of the value of financial advice among consumers as well as working on initiatives for the FAAA’s membership”.

The FAAA added he would also be responsible for member engagement activities and building awareness of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation.

FAAA chief executive Sarah Abood said: “John’s highly relevant background and experience, including wealth products, professional services and financial advice, make him a perfect fit for this important role.”

The appointment follows a number of board appointments at the professional association in the back half of 2023.

In October, the FAAA announced the appointment of Felicity Cooper, Deborah Kent, and Sheila Gutierrez-Cabacungan to its board, with all three positions commencing from its AGM on 20 November.

The three appointees, who will each see through a three-year term, joined the board following the term expirations of Kearsten James, Julie Matheson, and Julian Place in November.

Commenting on the changeover, FAAA chair David Sharpe said: “On behalf of the FAAA board, we are pleased to welcome Felicity, Deborah, and Sheila. Each bring important skills and experience which will add to the depth of knowledge on the FAAA board.”

Speaking on the departure of Ms James, Ms Matheson, and Mr Place, Mr Sharpe thanked them for their respective board tenures.

“Julie has been on the board for over 10 years. During this time she has continued to be a staunch advocate for the CFP program and committed to promoting the highest professional standards in the profession,” he added.

“During Kearsten’s term, she has been instrumental in bringing the AFA and FPA communities together and worked tirelessly to ensure the highest quality of governance to the board and the organisation.

“Julian has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the FAAA board, always focusing on members as a priority and working towards the highest education standards.”
